The Imperial War Museum are staging the first major exhibition on camouflage, which looks like being a real treat for any fashion aficionado. The first camouflage unit was set up by the French army in 1915, a pioneering body comprising mainly artists, they used Cubist techniques to hide equipment and to make uniforms less visible. The British originally called it Dazzle Painting (catchy huh?) but soon the French name stuck. Originally invented to hide guns and buildings from aerial surveillance and has now become a reoccurring theme in fashion -remember camo mesh tops from the '90s?
As a childhood WWII obsessive I love the Imperial War Museum, especially the weird smell in the trenches which seems to crop up in everything from fine wine to ramen! There will be lots of camo-inspired fashion and art as well as exhibits tracking the development of this benign war weapon. The range and variety of exhibits make it a brilliant source of inspiration and ideas for any fashion fan and will be on until November.
