Fashion Flashback: Will the Spice Girls reunion include a fashion revival?

spicegirlsreunion.jpg
While part of me would secretly love to see Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) don a pair of PVC knee-high boots, Melanie B (Scary Spice) her faux hair horns, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) platform trainers, Melanie C (Sporty Spice) a cropped sports bra and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) a Union Jack mini dress... fortunately for us, a Spice Girls reunion doesn't necessarily equal a fashion revival.

Word is that the former band members are currently on the brink of announcing their long-awaited return to music with a world tour worth a reported £100 million. The Times reports that they have put aside their differences to secure a lucrative deal for a "farewell" tour. A globally televised announcement is expected on Thursday at a press conference at the O2 Arena.

The last time that all five original members of the Spice Girls performed together was in 1998, nearly ten years ago. Since that time not only have their lives changed with all except Mel C becoming mothers (Emma Bunton is expecting her first child next month) but naturally so has their style.

Whether it be in a bid to reinvent themselves for solo careers or the fact that they've simply grown up, the Spice Girls have long shed their former wardrobes which once consisted of platform trainers, knee-high boots, hot pants, Union Jack dresses, leopard print, PVC and boob tubes. With each individual groomed for their own specific look, Posh Spice - conservative and classy, Scary Spice - wild and crazy, Ginger Spice - brazen and fiery, Baby Spice - demure and innocent and Sporty Spice - tomboyish and energetic, dressing the Spice Girls looked just as much fun as watching them wear it.

During the mid to late nineties most girls wanted to be just like them whether they'd admit it or not. There of course, had been girl groups prior to the Spice Girls but none with this particular marketing or message. These days, almost a decade after they split most of the girls' lives and styles have changed. Victoria Beckham's style has taken leaps and bounds as she aims to build a career in fashion. Melanie C has released another solo album and with it a new look - without a trainer in sight. And Geri Halliwell has definitely toned down her former busty showgirl look as she takes on motherhood.

On the eve of their reunion announcement, much speculation over what shape their world tour will take remains. Can nearly a decade apart really mean future success for the Spice Girls? Whatever it means, it'll be big that's for certain.

They sure were a lot of fun in their day. I was Scary Spice for Halloween in the 4th grade. Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to go by myself to one of their shows at the height of their success. If they do have a little tour, I’d love to go especially to see those crazy costumes they used to wear.
