CQ Hot or Not

cqhotornot22.6
It's that time of the week again when we gather together to discuss what's been happening across the globe fashion-wise. Take a look to see what's made it onto our Hot or Not list for this week:

HOT:

The Indie Saviours
No we're not talking about Peaches Geldof! We're excited that Jane Sheperdson formerly of Topshop is working for eco-brand People Tree, and now Mary Portas is on a mission to revamp independent stores. Could this be the beginning of the end for bargain giants such as Primark?

Bandage Dresses
This week Kate Beckinsale rocked up to the Die Hard 4.0 premiere wearing a Herve Leger bandage dress which got us to thinking... are we seeing a revival of the bandage dress? With collections from Christopher Kane and Proenza Schouler revisiting the trend could we be seeing a return of the curve? While they may not suit every body shape, they're certainly a welcome change from the shapeless, maternity-style smock dresses that have gripped the high street for too long now. It's time for some form-fitting fashion!

Hats, hats, hats!
Lately it seems that everywhere we look someone is pulling a Mischa Barton/Lindsay Lohan white trilby or a Sienna Miller straw fedora hat over their heads. With both Ascot and Glastonbury happening this week there has never a better time to test out that particular hat you've always wanted to try. Not just fashionable but practical too for when the sun decides to shine. Check out the latest styles here.

UK designers returning to London Fashion Week
First it was Luella Bartley who announced that she is returning home to show at London Fashion Week, much to the delight of all. Now we hear that CQ editor-in-chief Gemma's favourite Brit designer, Matthew Williamson also has his heart set on coming back especially for LFW. We welcome both back with open arms!

NOT:

Incorrect spelling on shopping sites
We've lost count of the amount of times we've seen "heals", "rouched", "sandles" and other atrocious spelling mistakes on our favourite high street sites... what's the deal people? Sort it out!

Festival scenesters
Much has been made this week about those who attend festivals to see and be seen. Blamed on the likes of Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, we're all for celebs getting involved but when it shifts focus away from the music then that's just silly. Festivals are for the music folks, they're not a fashion show!

Katie Holmes prematurely aging
While the jury is still out on Katie Holmes' recent 'pob' hairdo, what we don't like to see is the former Dawson's Creek star getting old before her time. She may be a wife and a mother now but that's no need to dress her like a Stepford Wife. Remember that she's still only 28... not 48.

Summer footwear
Can't do flips flops on the tube, "faux leather" lined ballet pumps make our feet a sweaty mess, as soon as we get sandals on it rains and there's no way we're wearing jelly shoes! Luckily for us Gemma's been pondering the solution to summer footwear at Shoewawa. Do yourself a favour and check it out!

    Hi Angharad

We do, in fact, have a site devoted entirely to ethical fashion if you'd prefer not to read about those with a less-than-spotless ethical record: On Hippyshopper, there's a section that covers all the latest news in green an ethical fashion, and Catwalk Queen keep a close eye on what goes on here. I'd say they were pretty well informed on these issues, and far more so than many other fashion focused sites I've seen.

Catwalk Queen's role is to offer a snapshot of what's going on in the fashion world as a whole, and while I'd be the first to agree there are issues with some of the cheaper brands, to ignore their existence would make it impossible to report accurately on today's fashion industry.

But why can't it be both fashionable and ethically conscious? Does it have to be that we are fashionable at the expense of someone else?

  • Natalie

Yet, this is primarily a fashion blog and not a social statement on working practices.

CQ has made the point about Primark before, and there are other websites that focus more on ethics if thats what you want.

  • Angharad

Let's hope it is the beginning of the end...

I love this blog - hell, i love fashion but it really does wind me up that you guys promote companies that use bad practices to churn out cheap clobber soooo heavily and without a second thought.

You're *really* influential and more than simply profiling better brands such as people tree, i'd like to see you remind us of the reasons that Primark etc can offer such cheap prices; more often than not your £3 bargain means a world of misery for someone in a third world country...

    Sermon over. :)
