A Milan women's jail is helping to rehabilitate its prisoners through fashion. Backed by Italian designer Anna Molinari (left) a cooperative named Project Alice offers inmates the opportunity to learn a trade through the production and design of clothes and have collaborated with local fashion houses and and theatrical designers.
The co-operative celebrated its 15th birthday by staging a fashion show in the prison and announced the launch of their own line; entitled Gatti Galeotti (jail cats) the collection will be hitting the shops next year. Alessandro Brevi, the cooperative’s director said: “working is the key that gives any meaning to detention.” Ex-inmates have gone on to set up tailoring and alterations business and many of them work at the Alice headquarters.
