Back when most authors were filling their pages with gothic melodrama, Jane Austen (as portrayed by Anne Hathaway in the recent film 'Becoming Jane') could fill two pages with a conversation about current fashions concerning muslin. She was a woman who knew about fashion, as well as everything else worth talking about in polite society. And let's face it, who doesn't love swooning over the various beautiful men chosen to bring characters like Mr Darcy, Mr Willougby and Captain Wentworth to life?
