Plot to kidnap Karl Lagerfeld revealed

Peter-Juergen Boock, a former member of the RAF who served 17 years in prison revealed the chilling plot, sparking a re-examination of a murder that took place in 1977 of a federal prosecutor. "We considered kidnapping the owner of the lingerie maker Palmers factory and also Karl Lagerfeld," Boock told Der Spiegel magazine. His claims that because Lagerfeld came from a wealthy family and therefore made him a target has angered many Germans. Reasons behind why the plot never materialised were not revealed. The RAF is suspected of killing 34 people including many high-profile figures in Germany. [source]

    This post would probably have made more sense if you'd explained that this occurred when Germany was split into two countries (East, which was communist and controlled by the Soviets and West, which was controlled by a combination of the British, French, Americans, and West Germans, depending on the timescale).



    The proposed kidnapping will have been a Cold War plot designed to improve morale on the east side of the Iron Curtain while showing the west that they were incapable of protecting their figureheads, let alone ordinary members of the public.



    As it stands, it just sounds like a crazy idea undertaken by a renegade section of the legitmate national army.
