The fashion industry has come in for a bit of criticism at Australian Fashion Week - and for once, it's not because of the "size 0" debate. Or not directly. Whew! No, this time the industry has been charged with glamourising smoking. At the Fashion TV Red Ribbon Foundation party (a preview bash for Australian Fashion Week), guests were apparently handed free packets of cigarettes by promo girls, and encouraged to smoke them. Now the Health Department are launching an investigation, and Australian Medical Association president Mukesh Haikerwal has hit out at the fashion industry.
"There are people in the fashion industry who are very skinny and smoking sends the message that you need to smoke to be thin. It's a very bad message," said Mukesh. It also increases your risk of cancer, so no wonder the health professionals are up in arms...
