White shirts - they don't need to be boring

I'm a big fan of interesting white shirts. No classic button-down jobbies for me, they need to have some kind of interest about them to make it into my wardrobe (after too many years forced into 'normal' white shirts at school and work). Here are some of my favourite twists on the old classic. All perfect with a black pencil skirt or a pair of jeans.

Ooh, I was lucky enough to wear fancy shirts to school. Our uniform was just white or blue blouse, navy skirt, navy sweater etc: it didn't matter what style the clothes were as long as they were the right colour (some girls used to try to convince the teachers that electric blue was a shade of navy — that dates me). So, when I was in the fourth form I got an amazing blouse from Miss Selfridge: it was fitted white cotton poplin with covered buttons and it had a huge wide lace collar made of the sort of lace that's like strips of cotton joined together with lacy bits. You could wear the collar wide like a lapel, or bunch it up at the collar. I would wear that shirt now if I still had it and could still get into it.
