Vivienne Westwood's touring exhibition reaches the de Young Museum in San Francisco having been to places as far flung as Tokyo, Canberra and Düsseldorf. Best known for her contrary use of traditional English fabrics such as Harris tweed and tartan, and for reworking of the corset the rebellious designer has become a Grande Dame of fashion. Retaining her individuality despite the growth of the brand she has never relinquished control of her company and still cycles everywhere. Westwood visited San Francisco where she was given an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University and had this advice to give to students: "If you want to be a fashion designer, don't look at fashion magazines. Don't care about them. Look at costume."
