Fake fur turns out to be dog fur
If you just managed to stop the dry-heaving after my last post look away now. The Humane Society of the United States received a tip-off about fur-trimmed coats from a concerned customer who said they seemed too real. When they tested a selection of samples all from fairly high-end retailers 24 out of the 25 samples were mislabeled or misadvertised. Three coats (one from Nordstrom's website and one from Tommy Hilfiger's website) contained fur from domesticated dogs, the others had fur from raccoon dogs and in one case, wolves. Humane Society anti-fur chief Kristen Leppert said "Anything goes in China. They pump these garments out all round the world. We know they sell dog and cat fur in Europe." Worryingly the retailers seem to be as much in the dark about this as the customers, which shows that traceability is as much an issue in clothes manufacture as it is in the food industry.
