Armani in trouble over advertising campaign

armanicampaign.jpgThe world of fashion advertising is a tricky one. No sooner are Dolce & Gabbana chastised over their "fantasy rape" advert than Armani find themselves in hot water too, for their childrenswear campaign. The pictures in question, which feature two little girls (one in a bikini top) wearing makeup and smiling into the camera, have apparently caused offence in Spain, where people feel the images are too provocative. The Institute for the Defense of Children in Spain is even demanding the removal of the images, saying they "promote sexual tourism".

Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I don't really see the problem with this one. If the kids are wearing makeup it's not particularly obvious, and you see lots of little girls in bikini tops during the summer. Should we be censoring our children to this extent, do you think, or is it all a bit of an overreaction?

You can't see from this image but the little girl on the left is caked in make-up (reminiscent of JonBenet Ramsay) and the girl on the right's outfit wouldn't look out of place in a lapdancing club. It's a horrible advert and I totally understand why parents don't like it.

i do find it a little strange that one child is so covered up, and the other is exposed.

Just like the liz hurley swimsuit thing, this is a total overreaction. I couldn't tell the girls are wearing makeup, and the bikini is so frilly and cute and obviously not covering breasts that it's totally unsexual or provocative. I think it's a lovely image actually, the girls look very pretty and innocent and age appropriate, more age appropriate than half the pouting, posturing six year olds I see down the street, being overly assertive and aggressive because they are told the world is out to get them. Too much awareness around issues like this can give kids worse complexes than just letting them be kids and wear a bikini top if they want to.

Total overreaction! I mean we see little girls on beaches on bikini tops so why is seeing it in a photo any different? And besides the black and white make it look sophisticatde and its not in a provocative style or anything. People are getting too paranoid!

There's nothing wrong with this at all. I wore a bikini top when I was in elementary school, and that one is particularly frilly and cute and innocent looking. As for the makeup, I can't imagine its anything more than what's necessary to keep the lights from washing them out.
