With designers handing out dresses like sweets during award show season, the biggest names always turn to the couture collections for custom made gowns. John Galliano for Dior and Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel are often the main go-to guys, but they've got big competition from the likes of Givenchy, Valentino and Elie Saab.
Decadent Drama

As you can imagine, with couture it's all about lavish detail and incredibly drama. These kind of looks are likely to be toned down for the red carpet, but you'll see definite inspiration from the shows in the kinds of dresses couture fans like Charlize Theron will wear to the ceremony. The Dior collection was especially stunning, and I'd love to see a subtler version of the blood red tiered dress on a willing 'victim'. Babel star Rinko Kikuchi has already proven she'll take fashion risks, so perhaps it's her turn to be dressed by the maestro himself?
Fairy Frocks with Frills
There has been a lot of chiffon, taffeta and net on the red carpet recently, and these are some of the more extreme examples of how the girly, fairy-like fabrics were used in the couture shows. From Christian Lacroix's patchwork blue sheath to acid yellow at Givenchy, these gowns prove that sheer fabrics don't necessarily have to be overy romantic (but they can be, as you can see with the rose strewn Lacroix gown).
