Oscar Predictions: London Designers
What better way to wrap up our London Fashion Week coverage than to tie it in with the next big event on the fashion / celebrity calender (Milan Fashion Week excepted, of course) - The Oscars. The big event takes place on Sunday 25th and as usual we'll be liveblogging the event, paying far more attention to what everyone's wearing than who wins the gongs.
In the first of our Oscar fashion predictions, we're looking to the LFW catwalks. Celebs often go for safe choices at the Oscars, so it's no surprise that timeless Brits like Ben De Lisi are often chosen to provide the frocks (remember Kate Winslet in that red dress).
Strapless dresses are always big Oscar news, as is anything floaty and feminine. We've seen a lot of tulle, taffeta and chiffon at recent award shows, and I think the romantic look will continue to be big for the Oscars. However, it would be good to see some more interesting and dramatic looks - like Ben De Lisi's metallic print and Amanda Wakeley's graphic print -to break up the predictability.
It's been great to see the stars supporting the younger designers and new talent from London Fashion Week. Thandie Newton wore Giles at the Baftas, for example. A plethora of gorgeous, unusual gowns hit the catwalk, and they would make a change from the predictable Versace, Valentino and - this year - Marchesa gowns that we'll undoubtedly see on the A list on Sunday. I'd love to see a nominee turn up in Jonathan Saunders. Cate Blanchett, are you listening?
