Dorothy Perkins monochrome outfit

Djl03ms

Its been a while since I wrote about Dorothy Perkins, Topshop's dumpy, shy but ultimately nicer sister. I know grey jeans (£25) are totally so last year but the shape and length are so brilliant that I'm prepared to overlook the diamante pocket detail. I'd wear with their black and cream retro tunic (also £25) and their cream ballet pump (£15) for a cool monochrome look. Top off the greyscale outfit with their black swing mac (£50), a wonderful basic and their limited edition purse, only £4.

Shouldn't this be called "bichrome"? I have seen black and white outfits being called "monochrome" in many fashion magazines and blogs. Monochrome means "one colour". I don't mean to be arsy, but I just don't get it!

It did cross my mind as I was typing it. It could be because white isn't actually a colour its an absence of colour, but I might be wrong. I'm all for pedantry and grammatical correctness, so thanks for pointing it out!

Isabelle, I'm with you. The scientific argument is that white is not actually a colour, so really the only colour in a black and white outfit is the black. A bit dodgy, but that's how we can wrangle it ;)

Oh, hmm haha well I am not quite convinced. Also, wasn't black an absence of colour?

Thanks for the replies though!

I have to agree with Silvia - monochome is shades of the same colour. Also, if we're talking physics (that white isn't a colour) then by optic definition the outfit is not monchomatic, but rather achromatic: no light saturation and therefore a neutral hue, which would include black, white and grays.

But black is every single colour. As an ex-art student and someone who spends wa-ay too much time on Paint and Photoshop, go check out the rgb values for black and white. Pendantry rules ok!
