CQ at the Screen Actors Guild Awards

AmericasagOk, I wasn't actually at the Screen Actor's Guild Awards (Adrian Grenier asked me but I had to turn him down as I couldn't get the time off work) but I did have great fun poring over the pictures this morning. There's nothing like a big thespy love-in to bring out the satin and sequins. As usual there were hits, there were misses, there was Reese Witherspoon and there were Desperate Housewives snogging their men on the red carpet. Oh, and yet again Helen Mirren looked more radiant than most girls half her age and America Ferrera proved she can fill out a dress so much better than Ellen Pompeo...

The Good:

Cate Blanchett always pushes the envelope, and her liquid gold Armani gown is gorgeous, as are her rhinestone studded platform shoes.

Eva Longoria swapped sex bomb for modern romance in sweet Vera Wang chiffon. Very pretty.

Who knew Maggie from Extras was such a sex kitten? After looking gorgeous in fuchsia at the Golden Globes, Ashley Jensen works the SAG awards red carpet in this season's blue.

Kyra Sedgwick chose a strapless column covered in beading. It would be dull as dishwater, but all that embellishment saves it. Great shoes, too.

Demi Moore is saved by her colour choice, a really rich royal blue. The dress looks exactly like a lengthened version of a green YSL frock she wore a couple of years ago.

Helen Mirren. Well, even if she was wearing a burlap sack, she'd still be great. The yellow clutch was a really great touch.

Katherine Heigl would look good in a bin liner, but she went for one-shouldered orange chiffon instead. Not the most original or risque choice in terms of shape, but it's good to see colour.

Kate Walsh, another Grey's Anatomy lady going for bright chiffon. This Kevan Hall gown is bound to split the vote, but kudos for picking something a bit unusual.

Rebecca Gayheart. Like Katherine Heigl she'd look good in a sack. Like Katherine Heigl she went for citrus coloured chiffon instead. Like Katherine Heigl, she looked gorgeous. Jealous? Moi?

Sandra Oh. Though I'm not keen on the Big Black Blob, the voluminous skirt on her spiderweb lace dress had her twirling around the red carpet. And clothes should be fun!

Andrea Bowen, a starlet in the making in a strapless olive gown. She looks pretty and polished, which is perfect for a 16 year old. Here's hoping she keeps Rachel Zoe at bay and doesn't feel the need to lose any more weight or dye her hair any lighter, though.

The Bad:

Melora Hardin obviously took our talk of Abigail's Party inspired 70s maxi dresses a bit too far. It might have worked were it not for the smocking on the waist and the cheap-looking colour.

Ellen Pompeo, you spend all that time trimming yourself down to the size of a toothpick, then dress in a shapeless sack. And don't get me started on the slaphead hair...

Mary Louise Parker continues where Lara Flynn Boyle left off. The dress might have worked alone, but the shoes just make it look too much like a ballet costume.

Debbie Mazar wears a floor-length condom that clings in all the wrong places. Argh!

Anika Noni Rose used torn up bits of crisp bag and quality street sweet wrapper to make her dress. It was a mistake.

The Boring:

Ann Hathaway. Such a pretty girl, such a safe dress. Strapless, black with a bit of tulle? Yawn!

Nicolette Sheridan in Collette Dinnigan. There's nothing wrong with it, but we've seen this look before a million times.

Claire Forlani, baby blue is such a 'prom dress' colour, and strapless is so predictable!

Felicity Huffman, I know what you were trying to do. Classic Hepburn chic. It was good in theory, and so nearly there in practice.

Teri Hatcher, we're bored of you, your botox and your 'I'm a princess, look how lucky I am' dresses. What a difference a year makes, eh?

The Short:

Another awards show, another cocktail dress for Reese Witherspoon. Not particularly amazing, but she looks great as always.

Diane Kruger goes for a draped assymetrical, sparkly style I just can't make my mind up on. Love it or loathe it?

Rachel McAdams tries to do a Sienna Miller in a quirky short 60s number. Sadly it's ruined by the Essex girl white stiletto shoes and weird pink hair (which I hope is for a film role).

The Curvy:

Yet again America Ferrera did curvaceous women proud in a gorgeous deep green number with a beautiful neckline. It's so great, have two views.

Jennifer Hudson gave Beyonce the finger in a sparkly, fitted number that showed off what God gave her.

Someone obviously said to Sarah Ramirez 'if you've got it, flaunt it'. So she did, and all power to her. The dress runs the risk of looking a bit cheap, but we'll let that slide for now.

Marcia Gay Harden, we know you can look amazing. It just helps to buy a dress that actually fits.

Megan Mullally. I love this woman, I love her chic little black number, and I love her simple hair and makeup.

Jaime Pressly joins the ranks of stylish mums-to-be in empire line grey Badgley Mischka.

Well, that's one more awards show down. Stay tuned for the Oscars next month. We can't wait!

I think Anika Noni Rose looks enchanting. The pattern on that dress is lovely.
