Next sale scuffles

Next_8

Can anyone tell me what is up with the massive queues at Next every Boxing Day? They claim to be open from 8 am or something and are besieged by hordes of bargain hunters but I really can't see the attraction. A recent article in the Times had 5,000 shoppers arriving at Brent Cross before daybreak causing a commotion, and the Canary Wharf branch was one in one out by lunchtime! I've picked a random page from their catalogue (above), and by the looks of it I'd be really be surprised if any CQers were big Next fans. I am biased because I have an inbuilt hatred of faux suede cubes and twigs in vases but surely I'm not the only one? If you or anyone you know shops at Next, please leave a comment!

Next sale scuffles - Comments

  • Actually, I was musing this exact same vexed question, only this morning...I, too, am over 40, and, frankly, Next was great in the Eighties, when George Davies started it up, but now, it is just another High St. multiple, so what is the great attraction ???

Like your other readers here, there are a few shops I would rather queue up outside of for the Sale - H & M, Zara, Top Shop, Monsoon, to name but four...Next is full of cheap little suits for the young office worker in her 20s, and cheap, but not that cheap, casual stuff for those non-work moments, but they're not cutting edge fashion any more, so why is everyone queuing up like there's no tomorrow, from 5am for Chrissake...'tis madness, for sure !!!

Ok, I will admit that I went to the Next sale, last year Boxing day.. however this year I saw the light in that... I can get better bargains... its true that their stuff is overpriced... most of the things are actually ugly... but if you really reeeeally look, there are some decent things.. a few smart trousers here and there and a nice blazer or two.. I also got this really pretty summer dress.

However, their stuff is still rather over priced, even for half price... imagine this.. their half price is H&M's full price for quite a few items... so I know where I would be heading!!!

Actually the sale starts at 5am... and yes it gets crazy...people forget their manners and all that. Nothing to rant and rave about, there are better shops, as we have all established in here.

I'm probably a bit older than the average reader here, but I generally agree that Next stuff is highly uninspiring, either half price or full price. Despite being over 40, I still would rather go to Topshop etc and if I'm looking for conservative stuff, I far prefer M&S.

Next create a "buzz" about their sales as they don't do mid-season sales and don't have the usual sale rail most other high street shops favour. I can't believe however that people are still falling for it after all these years. I have to confess I used to be one of those people in the queue at 6am, but not for many years now as the stuff just isn't worth it, even at half price.

That said, you can sometimes get some nice suits in the sale. I have the Directory and got a lovely suit for work in the sale for £45 (jacket and trousers) and have also ordered a leather jacket for £30 - still waiting for it to arrive so not sure if it's a keeper or not yet.

I had the horror of popping out on Boxing Day morning for some milk. As I live in Manchester city centre I thougt I might see two or three people around at 8.15. But no I gasp as I see hoards of middle-englanders queueing for the crappy clothes and tasteless bland beige homeware of Next. Why do people do it. Some were there with tents. I mean really. They must have spent the night in subzero temperatures for what? Ten pounds off that shapeless dress, the unfitting jeans or as Isabelle so rightly said, the god awful shearling. Every year the stuff gets put on clothes and every year I wonder who wants to look like a yak. Anyway if someone would like to inform me of the madness I will be checking out this page with anticipation. Why Why Why? And Erin you are soooo right!

I have a phobia of next sales. I get claustrophobic in them (the only other place I get claustrophobic in is in small horrible public bathrooms =P) and I am actually frightened of them.

It's the mess and hordes of people paying prices that aren't even that reduced for not especially nice clothes.
