Liz Hurley's kids' collection under fire

Elizabeth_sw_hurley_leopard It's been a bad year for children's swimwear designers, hasn't it? Melissa Odabash and Ashley Paige were both heavily criticised for including skimpy bikinis in their children's collections, and now Elizabeth Hurley has come under fire from children's charities and MPs - not for the skimpiness of her designs, but for the patterns used on them.

Hurley, who launched her collection this week, was forced to withdrawn the swimsuit pictured, plus others like it, when Anne Widdicome (MP) and children's charity NCH said animal print was unsuitable for childrenswear. "'It represents the sexualisation of children," said Widdicome, whilst NCH took a slightly less strident view, with a spokeswoman commenting that although the print is perhaps "inappropriate" for children, "it's important that we don't take the fun out of childhood by being too over the top about what they're wearing."  What do you think? Is animal print too sexy for children, or is this going too far?

I've been looking everywhere for exactly this kind of suit. My daughter has olive skin and brownish/blond hair and the colors work great for her. She's had an animal print suit every year since she was three. It's not sexual to me, but stylish and complimentary. Can I buy one of Liz's throw-away suits? Can't people remember that if "they" don't like it, then "they" don't have to buy it.

I loved my bikini as a small girl - though mainly I only used to wear the bottoms - it's not like I had anything on top to cover up. Do we really not let our children run around naked any more? (Fully covered in suncream of course)

That swimwear looks fine to me, it's not as if she's designed tiny little bikinis for children. That'd be a lot worse!

i do agree in general, but i think the picture here is misrepresentative - given that the little girl's one-piece swim suit was combined with another little girl in a bikini and a beautiful blonde (and buxom)model in a bikini, alongside liz herself wearing the same leopard print (who hardly shies from sexing it up at every opportunity), there probably are more grounds for arguing for the sexualisation of young children here. or at least for a lack of foresight on the part of liz hurley and her promotors in putting the shoot together in the first place!

  • i agree with everyone too...this is silly...maybe the suit would be inappropriate if it were skimpy too, but i actually think it's super cute
