Kate Winslet bans fashion magazines

Winslett Fresh from her airbrushing on the cover of next month's Vogue, and still clearly unimpressed with the goings-on of the fashion industry,  Kate Winslet said this week that she has banned all fashion magazines from her home, as she's worried about the effect they could have on her six year old daughter, Mia. "Young girls are impressionable," said Kate. "What I resent is there is an image of perfection that is getting thinner and thinner. It’s truly upsetting to me.”

Kate's clearly not the only one who thinks that fashion models can be too thin, but is banning magazines the answer, I wonder?

  • Gotta love Kate Winslet! I love her attitude to her body and body image in general. I do struggle with feeling low about how I look after flicking through fashion mags, definitely.

I guess I'm pretty lucky in that I honestly don't think I've ever had a "OMG I'm too fat!" moment after looking at fashion mags. I think the main problem comes from 'celebrities' like Nicole Ritchie (I know she's an obvious example) being pictured everyday on every cover of every gossip rag. Fashion mags are about fashion and yes they are aspirational but that's part of their raison d'etre!

  • I actually stopped buying fashion magazines a while ago, because they just made me feel inferior, not just with the models used, but with the product picks, which always seemed to assume that everyone was rich. I got sick of looking at things I could never afford, so now I get my fashion from the web, instead. Of course, I guess the mags may have improved since then!

I completely agree with the above.

Unfortunately fashion magazines continue the perpetration of the notion that all women are size six or less and not the average (14). I enjoy looking at the fashion pages and can blank out the models (they are thin to make even the worst creations look good, although there is also that androgynous young boy thing too) but I often find the only normal people are either "inspirational" women - ie business women and leaders in their field types - or women who'm "we can learn from" - those helping charities etc. Where are all the normal people. Why can't we have standard size models - look how great the Dove women are.

I now only read Vogue which is mostly about high fashion so I can concede that it will be mostly filled with models - but still I ask my husband do I look fat straight afterwards

    I think it is.

When I was in my late teens/early 20s I used to buy fashion mags. Then I started uni and started reading a lot of feminist lit and decided to stop buying fashion mags. My self-esteem increased tenfold.
