Did Vogue airbrush Kate Winslet?

Vogue_2 UK Vogue have denied claims that some serious airbrushing went on when they photographed Kate Winslet for their January 2007 cover. The fashion bible say the actress is pictured "au naturel" in this picture, although recent pictures of Kate looking rather more lined than she does here (see behind the jump), would seem to suggest otherwise - or so say the British media, anyway.

Winslet, of course, is famously opposed to the digital manipulation of her image (she got very upset with GQ a few years ago when they did the same thing), and Vogue say they've respected that. Is so, it'll be something of a first: can you imagine a fashion magazine not being tempted to airbrush the model on their cover, even a little bit?

Kate_8 So, what do you think? Have Vogue touched up Kate (well, so to speak)? And is she right to be angry with them if they have?

Kate looks great in every photo!

  • Well, I'm a journalist myself and I refuse to appear in my magazine without slimming down my pot belly, airbrushing the odd spot or fixing a grimace. If it was my job to be beautiful (rather than produce beautiful words) I'd demand that they fixed me up before exposing me to the masses :)

  • I must say, Kate Winslet is drop dead gorgeous in both pictures. The cover was probably touched up a little bit but I think it's mostly makeup, lighting, facial expression, etc. I mean, I can't see Vogue not doing ANY airbrushing but I just think they didn't go to extremes or anything and tried to keep it as little as possible for Kate's sake.

I didn't even recognize Kate. And she's my ultimate girl-crush so I'd get whiplash if I caught sight of her on a magazine cover in the grocery store. Anyway, they had to have retouched her photo for the cover. Now whether or not she has a right to be angry... I don't really know. I can understand her desire to be portrayed in a natural way (it's already been said, but I'll say it again: all these airbrushed phony pictures are ruining self-esteems everywhere). Of course, Kate's been in the business for some time now. I think she ought to know by now which way the wind blows when it comes to doing a magazine photo shoot. They can't just leave a front cover photo alone. Impossible.
