CQ's Top 50 of 2006: Fashion News

Cqtop50As 2006 draws to a close Catwalk Queen will be taking a look back over what made us drool, gasp, cringe and go ga-ga over in that crazy world we are all obsessed with called fashion. Just like that drunken nostalgic feeling you get on New Years Eve when you try reminiscence about what's happened during the past year, in the next few days CQ will list what we believe is this year's Top 50 fashion trends, news, issues and events. Enjoy!

Top 50 of 2006 (50 - 45): Fashion News

What made fashion news this year could really be summed up in just two words... Kate Moss.  She was here, she was there, she was well, to be blunt ... bloody everywhere! And like the true fashion fans that we are, CQ was with her every step of the way...

50. Ralph Lauren designing Wimbledon uniforms

Yep, it was the moment when a high end designer went courtside when Ralph Lauren was hired to design this year's Wimbledon uniforms. So successful was the partnership, Lauren has signed on to be the official outfitter until 2010.

49. Naomi Campbell getting arrested

We always knew she had a bad temper so when news of her arrest in October this year broke no one, least of all us, were terribly surprised. Following allegations of her throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper back in January, Campbell was arrested (then later released on bail) when she refused to show up to the hearing. In November, she was back on the catwalk at the annual Lexus Fashion night. To this date, it is still unclear as to what the outcome will be on the assault charge but if Kate Moss's career comeback is anything to go by then I'm sure this will only boost Naomi's.

48. Victoria Beckham turning fashion guru

In between giving birth and after finally realising a solo music career is merely a dream, Victoria Beckham launched her own fashion crusade this year. A VB empire which includes lucrative advertising contracts with Becks, a book, website, clothing collections and her own possible tv show (yikes!) There's no doubting her sense of style, as seen at this year's New York Fashion Week, but is the world really ready for this?

47. Roland Mouret designing capsule collection for GAP

There was roaring applause when it was announced in September that Roland Mouret would be designing a limited collection for GAP. The applause soon subsided when the collection was revealed - shapeless shift dresses that only a fraction of the population could actually pull off. Nevertheless, the pieces sold like hotcakes when they launched in November. This made little impact on GAP's annual takings, however, with sales still taking a nose-dive.

46. Jane Shepherdson quitting Topshop

As Topshop's Brand Director for 18 years, the rumour-mill went into overdrive when it was announced that Jane Shepherdson had decided to quit. Quickly following confirmation that Kate Moss had signed on to design a collection for the high street brand, it didn't take long for the media to put two and two together and blame this as the reason behind her resignation. Here were CQ's suggestions on which career path Jane Shepherdson should choose next.

45. Kate Moss's career making a HUGE comeback

It has to up there with one of the most successful celeb comebacks of all time. Despite being outed late last year as a coke user by the Daily Mirror and consequently losing major advertising contracts with H&M, Chanel and Burberry (who both later chose to reinstate their contracts), Kate Moss has somehow managed bounce back in a colossal way. Twelve months later and she has bagged 18 top modelling contracts including Rimmel, Agent Provocateaur, Roberto Cavalli, Bulgari, CK and Versace - just to name a few! She is also set to design her own collection for Topshop nudging her total earnings for 2006 close to £30 million.  Not a bad year, wouldn't you agree?
