PeTA's 'Worst Dressed Celebrity List' for 2006

600nicolerichieThe wait is over!  Self-proclaimed 'American Royalty', Ms Paris Hilton, has been ousted from her number one spot on PeTA's annual 'Worst Dressed Celebrity List' for 2006, by on-again-off-again bestie Nicole Richie.

Fur Is Dead, PeTA's anti-fur news website, reports that their top four this year are Nicole, followed closely by Ashley Olsen, Christina Ricci and Eva Longoria.  The creme de la creme of the announcement, however, was PeTA's reasoning behind their choices:

"1. Nicole Richie: This pelt-wearing party girl is all animal skin and bones. She's an incredible shrinking woman with the heart to match.

2. Ashley Olsen: Wearing fur does add 20 pounds, but if Ashley wants to fill out her frame, we suggest using a fork instead.

3. Christina Ricci: Disregarding the holiday season's "Peace on Earth" message, Ricci recently posed for a magazine cover wearing fur from slaughtered reindeer. At least she's not into fur hats: Imagine how many more pelts it would take to cover that forehead.

4. Eva Longoria: You'd think she'd be more sympathetic to the plight of rabbits considering the way she screws around like one on Wisteria Lane."

In the words of another furry animal: "Miaow!"

I understand their concern for fur, but PETA is being downright mean. Maybe those celebrities will spite the group because of their mean comments and continue to wear fur. Tactless and radical.

yeah, that forehead comment, for example, was TOTALLY unnecessary. if they disagree with a person's choices and values then that's fine, but to make it a personal attack is just horrible. they're not doing themselves any favours. and anyway, their own spokeswomen are hardly the epitome of class and style - pamela anderson, anyone?

I agree. Extremely catty remarks from an organisation that should be setting the example for good behaviour (preaching, sins, throwing the first stone, etc).. which is why there's a 'miaow!' there!

Unlike all of you, I didn't find Peta's comments extreme.
People - especially celebrities who should realise that people copy their style and fashion choices - should not go round wearing the skins of tortured animals. They deserved Peta's "harsh" comments.

I disagree with the above poster. None of PETA's comments were constructive, relevant "wake up and smell the injustice" sort of thing. They sounded like the catty, shallow remarks of insecure highschool girls. While I believe their intentions are (somewhat) noble, PETA's self-righteous, often cruel remarks toward others give animal lover's a bad rep.

I think the problem is, though, Caroline, that Christina Ricci would have a...er.. large forehead and Nicole Ritchie would have a (probable) eating disorder whether or not they wore fur. I personally think it's fair enough to criticise the choices people make if you do so constructively, but I think Peta discredit themselves by making nasty comments about the aspects of their appearances that these women can't do much about. I'd take them a lot more seriously if they laid off the bitchiness and concentrated on campaigning against fur.

While I am strongly against wearing fur and I hate to see celebs sporting it, I have to agree with the majority that some of their comments were catty and unnecessary. Personal attacks are not cool.

Possibly this is a stupid question, but can't animals be reared for fur in good conditions, and killed painlessly?

And what about vintage fur? I'd like to wear my granny's old fur coats, but I'd have to wear a sign round me neck saying 'I Inherited This, I Didn't Slaughter It For Kicks'. Or something.

PETA have a point, but a spot of nuance wouldn't go amiss.

Posted by: boeciana | November 30, 2006 12:21 PM

boeciana - so far, there is no where that "humanely" rears or slaughters animals for fur.
Besides, even if they lived in reasonable conditions, it's still completely wrong.

Don't wear vintage fur - you are showing people that fur is apparently fashionable. Also, you can send your old fur coats to Peta who then use them for demos and more commonly send them to people living in poverty. The damage is done, so they might as well put the coats to the best of use.

Fur is the skin of tortured animals.

I am a 15 year old boy from England.
I hate fur and what fur stands for. I must say the remarks we a little catty but when celebs or anyone for that matter feel the need to wear a dead amimal then things must be said. I recentaly forund an old mink fur coat (was my nans) in my attic. I cant throw/give it away because she is dead and my mum wants to keep it. Humans can live without fur. If you was to play the killing of the animals at a fashion show then maybe people wont be so quick to pay up. Also Victoria secret have introduced Faux fur. I know Faux isant good but its better than an animal. In the future (in my lifetime i hope) we will be able to stop the 'craving' for fur and stop fur production completly. One last thing, how would Nicole Richie like to be skinned alive and then have a tiger ware her nasty remails?

LOL! I guess those comments by PETA are well deserved. As celebrities, these people have the obligation to show a good example to the public. In this day and age, fur is no longer necessary but these idiot celebs who continue to wear them are only doing it for fashion and luxury. And as long as there's demand for fur, countless animals will continue to suffer horrible deaths in the hands of cruel humans who are motivated by nothing more than greed.

Say NO to fur!

That´s right, PETA, throw them all the rocks you have, they deserve it! I mean, we can´t speak to the heart of someone who just doesn´t have it, or try to reach the good sense of superficial bitches!! They know that real fur comes from real animals (their DO have tiny little brains, but still they have them…), and in spite of all the information they have about the “cruelty” subject (yes, because, as everybody else, they already know about it too) they still wear fur all the time, don´t they? So, try to hit them where it hurts them more: their unlimited vanity and stupid pride!

Posted by: Celia | January 6, 2007 11:22 PM

LOL!! That’s right, if you can’t make them feel guilty, make them fell ridiculous! As for me, I just say they all look as fat as bears and as old as my granny… no offence (to bears or granny, of course)!!!!

Posted by: Fatima | January 6, 2007 11:32 PM

Lmao! In all honesty i think the comments made about them were hilarious and damm right true and blunt.
Those celebs choose to ignore the cruelty animals go through just so they can look like a frumpy old woman, so I'm sure these comments can and will be ignored to.

Thanks to idiots like J.Lo, Beyonce and now these ignorent woman fur is becoming more fashionable..and what for?! so all girls can walk around like apes and look like frumpy bears? Its idiotic and simply a whole thing of "i can".

I have just read a few of the comments and have to say that I feel absolutley no sympathy towards these cruel women!, in fact they make me sick and if a personal attack on the one thing they care about, their appearance is what it takes then so be it!.
I am a huge supporter of PETA and all the work they do, thanks guys you give me hope that there are caring people out there. As to the comments they made they actually made me laugh...:). SAY NO 2 FUR!!!!

Posted by: Gaby | April 22, 2007 2:33 PM

PETA needs to get a life. Spend more time helping animals rather than coming up with tasteless, rude, and stupid comments about these young women. Do You really think they want to agree with you now that you have said that. I am a vegetarian and a member of a DIFFERENT animal rights group, but I side with the celebs on this one. I mean come on, whoever wrote this is representing a whole organization, have some class, PETA.

Fur???? Hmmmmm.... Leather? Hand bags, shoes, caps, hats, oh wait thats accepteable. Oh ya and I forgot Hamburger, Fillet Mingon, Chicken, Tuna, Fois Gras, Veal...Thats right these thing are to sustain life as we know it, Fois Gras a personal favorite of mine, goose which are typically fed a controlled amount of corn mash through a tube placed in the animal's esophagus against their will, Veal-even better, raised in cages and tehn slaughtered for meat at early age. Keep in mind people Fur wearers are not the only demons out there.
