Matalan lays off staff for Christmas

Matalan_2

Oh dear. Things haven't been looking good at Matalan for a while now (and I'm not just talking about the clothes), and now, in a bid to cut their losses, the chain is to lay off temporary workers and reduce staff hours in 40 of its Northern stores. And a very happy Christmas to you, too, Matalan!

Around 1000 members of staff will affected by the moves, but if Matalan think that their Christmas stock will help reverse their fortunes, I suspect they may have another think coming: I could quite fancy the little black bow dress in the picture, which is £20 (and good luck finding it!) but the rest of the collection on the website is lacklustre to say the least. What do you think? Is this the end of Matalan as we know it?

It's a shame. I quite like Matalan, although their collections are a bit hit and miss nowadays. They're still great for shoes and cheap accessories, although I suspect that the cheapness that is Primark is probably doing them in (and I've seen some identical items in their lines, too).

Yes, I think if anything's going to save them it'll probably be the shoes - I mean, shoes for £10 are pretty hard to resist, and a lot of the shoes they've had in have been lovely. I also think that if the items they put into their catalogue were ever actually available in the store (*cough*yellowjacket*cough*) it would do them a lot of good...
