Georgio Armani Doesn't Like Thin Girls

Georgioarmani_2 Thought the skinny models debate had died a death? Think again - for Georgio Armani has decided to fan the flames by urging his fellow fashion designers to ban "thin girls" from the catwalks.

"I have never liked thin girls," says the designer, who claims to have never used size zero models, preferring to send UK size 14 women down the catwalk instead.  "Sure, I choose very feminine women with little breast and straight hips," he added, ruining things slightly (surely its young boys who have straight hips and "little breast", not "very feminine women"?) "However, there are other designers out there who like to provoke, who like to make a show so they get talked about."

No word from the Armani camp on just how thin would be "too thin" for the designer, but government officials in his native Italy have announced that models at next year's Milan Fashion Week will be required to show a "good health" certificate before they'll be allowed to work.

'The time has now come for clarity,' said Armani. 'We all need to work together against anorexia.'

I think this ridiculous assertion that thin girl models who have little or no breasts and straight hips directly relates to the fact that most of these male designers are gay men and they want their women models to, essentially mimic young gay men. And they have this symbiotic relationship with the women who run most of the fashion magazines and the whole thing goes round and round. They, the designers, use this body type model, their choices are then reinforced by these fashion magazines who also use these models. The young girls starve themselves to look decrepit and the designer insist that their clothes have to "hang a certain way", i.e. the way they hang and look on these storks. And they wonder why few buy their stuff. Aside from the fact that the stuff is usually ridiculous, overpriced and unwearable, it doesn't fit the normal woman. "This is all about sour grapes" you wonder? I'm a size 6 and I don't look with envy at these models or the clothes that they are modeling.

yeah, i definately see Wendy's point about the hypocritical nature of the fashion industry. But really, i think things are changing. i'm a model, probably guilty of what you'd call having an unrealistic shape and sending bad messages, but i've always been like this. Anyway, at the last show i walked in, there were several models who were quite healthy looking, curvaceous, and definately hotter than me! I liked to see the variety in the show, and the curvier models definately got a better response from the crowd than the skinny ones. :( oh well.

THANK YOU for saying "It's not particularly the models' own fault." you have no idea how much that means to me. it isn't our fault!!!!!!

but yeah, i would like to see models with a BMI above, say, FIFTEEN on the runways. i recently attended an exhibit on fashion at a museum where they had videos playing of runways in paris, and i actually felt fat. I have a BMI of 16.7. I'm not saying that those models shouldn't be allowed to walk. I'm jsut saying that someone should make sure they EAT. I heard one girl, who couldn't be older than twelve, say to her little sister, "God, i wish i looked like them. I wish mom would let me go on a diet. i'm so fat." The kid was already very thin. that scares me.

so basically, i'm very wishywashy on this whole deal. and thank you wendy for being actually UNDERSTANDING.

and sheila, i'm sorry i was sort of rude before. but i was pretty hurt. but it's all good now. haha. sorry!

  • Bah Humbug !!!

If Giorgio hasn't ever used a size 0 model in any of his Runway Shows, then I'll eat my hat...size 14s my arse !!! As if...

The hypocrisy of the Fashion Industry generally is just breathtaking, isn't it ?!! The first sign of the possibility of funding being taken away for London Fashion Week, unless the use of these extremely waif-like beanpoles is abandoned, and every Fashion Designer there suddenly claims never to use anyone who doesn't look healthy or underweight, and yet, the likes of Lily Cole, Kate Moss, et al, are all working non-stop during the duration of the shows...sheer madness !! They are all way underweight for their height...and just not a true realistic shape for the rest of the female sex - basically healthy they may be, but they are still giving out the message that this is a desirable target weight to get to, and this is why we have ten-year olds checking into the Anorexia/Bulimia Clinics in London...and Pro-anorexia websites are proliferationg all over the Internet like a nasty disease...Fashion Shows, magazines, Actresses in Hollywood, general female imagery everywhere...it's all part of it !!

It's not particularly the models' own fault, but what it does mean is that it is the whole Fashion Industry generally, which needs to pull together on this one...

BUT...at the end of the day, I guess that, even though our Giorgio may be hypocritical, he is doing us all a service by making a stand - I just hope he stands by his convictions...
