Babysitters' Club Fashion Inspiration

This retro style might be a little too recent, but I thought I'd take inspiration from some of my childhood reading. For the uninitiated, The Babysitters' Club was a trashy series of books about a gang of teenage girls who decide to form a babysitters' club. The books were very '80s, and lots of fun. The most quintessential BSC character was Claudia Lynn Kishi, notorious for hiding junk food around her bedroom and for being a seriously kooky dresser. Leggings, waistcoats,  baggy patterned shirts and parrot earrings, nothing was too OTT for Claudia. If you thought being seriously kooky was an oxymoron, check after the jump for a picture... but be warned, its only for the brave!

Claudia would no doubt approve of this Celia Birtwell tunic from Topshop (£45), paired with some eye-poppingly '80s leggings, also from Topshop (£15). I can't imagine Claudia faffing about in high heels, so these black 'Atoll' pumps with embroidery detail from Faith (£35) would definitely fit the bill. Just to make sure the outfit isn't too matchy matchy (!) add Ollie + Nic's Agnes Tote (£125) in purple, and for the kooky finishing touch add Dorothy Perkins' fan and mirror earrings (£4) and a side ponytail.

i THINK THAT THE BABYSITTERS CLUB IS THE BEST. i MIGHT BE AN ADULT NOW BUT I STILL READ THESE BOOKS. They have also helped me with my childcare bussiness. I would have to say that Maryanne is my favorite character because I am just like her.

  • Hurrah for BSC! :)

  • Hahaha I loved the BSC, I remember when I was about 10, I made my Mum make a BSC birthday cake for me! Dawn was always my favourite, but loved reading the descriptions of what Claudia and Stacey would wear, in the 7-page introduction to everyone in every bloody book - normally I'd skim through everyone else's descriptions, but theirs were brilliant.

    Great post!

I swear to god, reading how Claudia would wear--gasp!--clashing prints changed my whole world-view. Awesome post!
