Granny Army

If like me, you're a fan of charity shops you might come across a pair of mittens or a scarf made by local OAPs for charity. I've got a lovely pair of stripy handknit mittens from one such charity shop but it seems that high fashion is taking things a step further. John Rocha, Jaeger, Lowie (design pictured above may or may not have been produced by a granny!) and young designer Claire Tough are a few of the designers who use an army of grannies to produce high-quality hand knits. Often these women have been knitting their whole lives and have tremendous skills which can be applied to these luxury designs. My own grandmother used to knit everything from socks to pullovers for the whole family, do any of our regular CQ readers have a trendy knitting granny?

  • I am English...but I've always said mom, as does my mother, so I write it that way too. I think it's a Brummie thing, I've just never called her my 'mum'.

Gemma - I thought you and Catwalk Queen were English so I'm confused that you always write 'Mom' instead of 'Mum'?

  • My mom taught me the basics when I was really young, but after that I just taught myself from a combination of the stitch & bitch books by Debbie Stoller and Knittinghelp.com's video tutorials. It's much easier than it looks - once you know how to knit and purl you can do everything from there.

  • I'd love to be able to knit. One of my good friends in fantastic and makes all sorts of things for friends and family (I scored some lovely lounging slippers for my birthday).

All I can manage is plain stitch and can't read a pattern. So, if you want a pretty boring scarf, I'm your woman!

Gemma, did someone teach you or did you teach yourself?

I have a trendy knitting granny! She even chrochets lovely shawls, so lovely I bothered to learn crocheting myself. Now I'm making christmas presents out of them for the second year in a row:)
