Girls Will Be Boys: Yay or Nay?

There's been a lot of talk in mags and (thanks to a certain Mrs Beckham) on telly about the Winter trend for women dressing in men's style tailoring, but most high street stores seem to be staying clear of it, preferring instead to push us all into shift dresses, smocks and leggings. However, a select few are taking the risk and bringing us affordable versions of the mansize look. See these offerings from Zara and Oasis for details.

So the question is...would you give this look a go? Are mainstream stores right to bypass the look on the assumption that most of us will be giving it a wide berth? Or are you dreaming of the perfect pair of slacks and a great men's shirt? 'Girls Will Be Boys' - Yay or Nay?

I would say "Nay" this trend wont last long because to look good in this trend involves a very slim figure because of the shaplessness of mens clothes in comparison to womans clothes not many women will be able to look good in it seeing as the average dress size in the UK is something like a 12-14 (I think). But I love the cute V-necks with the shirts you dont have to necessarily be dead skinny to wear those.

I love the picture on the right... is that from Zara or Oasis??
I'd say yay to this... even curvy girls can get away with this look if done in the right waym, unlike skinny jeans or really short dresses.
this can still look classy even if you're a size 18....

The average dress size in the Uk is more like a 16 now Penelope, so I think you're right!

Posted by: Gemma | October 18, 2006 4:40 PM

Nah. I'm far too girly. I don't mind mens shirts but I'd have to wear it with a skirt and heels to even it up.

Posted by: Julia | October 18, 2006 4:42 PM

Nay unless you are tall and slim - I would lokk like a size 16 5 foot drag king - not a good look at the best of times

Posted by: deb | October 18, 2006 5:12 PM

Yay! I like the menswear trend - I think it's a cool way to mix things up a bit.. I wish more stores would pick up on it, as it's a bit hard for me right now to find good menswear-inspired pieces that I like.

Posted by: Eileen | October 18, 2006 5:53 PM

Nay. I like the look on these models, but the clothes would just swamp me, and I like my girly things too much.

I've been working the tomboy look for years and I'm not going to stop now!

Posted by: Frapp | October 18, 2006 6:09 PM

I like it! Love sharp tailoring and trousers! YAY...

nay, id get far too bored without my girly stuff! plus ud probably have to keep make up quite sutble to maintain the androgenous look?

Posted by: little sonfica | October 18, 2006 6:27 PM

Yay, I'd do it...maybe not head-to-toe, necessarily, but I think touches of it are really cool and work for every figure. Plus, I've always been a bit of a tomboy; I've only recently re-discovered skirts :)

This is such a toughie. I have some great tailored pinstripe trousers that are very mannish but needed dressing up alot... otherwise men's sweaters, men's macs... NAY

YAY. Looks great with 50s style glamour make-up (wide leg grey tailor trousers and a shirt with red lips and black eyeliner...).

Posted by: Silvia | October 18, 2006 7:25 PM

YAY. But I disagree that the mainstream stores are missing out on the trend. It's everywhere! H&M, Zara, C&A, We Fashion, Coolcot, etc.

I'm all for it!! It's sexy and playful and simply allows women more freedom in their expression. In fact, I'm planning on purchasing some vintage suspenders this weekend to go with my black pants and white button up.

Posted by: Carlene | October 18, 2006 8:23 PM

Yay for the general concept - especially if you wear with giant brooches and killer heels. Nay for that awful grey V-neck though, 'cos it reminds me of school uniform.

Posted by: Arnez | October 18, 2006 10:00 PM

yay. maybe not all out, but I'd try it...

Posted by: Sam | October 18, 2006 10:33 PM

Yay! It can work on everyone and in varying degress of the look. I do love the look on the modal on the right. She kind of fails adrogynous though with her overtly feminine hair. I really love the pants that come out of this trend. (And I'm about an inch away from short.)

Posted by: Ivy Frozen | October 18, 2006 11:13 PM

Maybe on occassion...but I think women should embrace their curves and their unique frame. It's beautiful! Don't hide it under less form-fitting attire. Vivan Hembras!

Posted by: Lauren | October 18, 2006 11:17 PM

Yay! I think it's cute in it's own right and it's great that we really have a wide range of styles to choose from and thank goodness a lot of them are going back to a much classier look ...well some of them are anyway.

Posted by: Darlene | October 19, 2006 1:09 AM

YAY. I love menswear. This isn't even a question. It keeps coming back season after season, if that's a testament to this style. It's classic, but fresh, and can be really sexy if you do it right.

I even think that having curves makes this look better, because then you don't look like a man!

I tried the trousers on the left in Zara just two days ago. They are very flattering on the bum. Also they go a size down. I have always been a size 10, but these fitted me in 8 (and I know that I have not lost any weight). If you are short however, you could only get away wearing them with hills.
I love this trend, but it does look better on tall people.

Posted by: arelya | October 19, 2006 10:47 AM

I'm going to Zara this weekend! The mannish style is perfect for my lanky frame. Plus I love the retro air to it, I'm bringing out my brogues, white shirt and mac..Definitely a yay!

Posted by: Isabelle | October 19, 2006 11:17 AM

I think Yay, but in moderation.

Posted by: Jenni | October 19, 2006 11:20 AM

Personally - Nay. I always end up looking like a bad cross dresser, I can't get it right. It seems to look OK on tall slim types. Plus I have to wear "smart" stuff for work, so I can never really feel dressed up or totally relaxed in formal style trousers and shirts, it's what I wear every day. The style always makes me think of high powered business women or trophy wives...

Posted by: Sista Lou | October 19, 2006 11:33 AM

YAY! I find men's tailoring more comfy for pants. However, I don't like to wear all men's clothes. I'll wear the pants and jacket with a lacy top and killer heels.

Posted by: Jael | October 19, 2006 12:11 PM

oh it´s a yay! definetly! it suits us so much better than men... ahahaha

Posted by: Uhecca | October 19, 2006 3:47 PM

Yay, but I hate the pic on the right witch looks bland and shapeless. Menswear inspired clothing on women can be empowering and sexy, think Marlene Deitrich. I think this trend is a logic retaliation to all the frou frou and babydoll bows we've had for the last several years.

Posted by: expatsy | October 19, 2006 7:49 PM

Yay! I think it's very sophisticated and elegant, and a woman can finally express herself differently via her attire. I also agree with Carlene, it allows women more freedom in their expression. I personally love it.

Posted by: Michelle | November 7, 2006 4:24 PM

yay, i like it and think that it goes good with any figure as long as u pickt he right pieces of mensware.
