New Look Settles Out Of Court With Jimmy Choo
This is perhaps of more interest to Shoewawa readers, but we've been talking recently about high street stores being accused of copying designer fashion, so this one seemed appropriate.
New Look has just recalled 1,000 pairs of its "Bonbon" shoe, after Jimmy Choo accused the high street giant of copying one of its design. New Look will also apparently pay the designer something in the region of £80,000 for copyright infringement. Good news for Jimmy Choo, not such good news for those of us who appreciate the opportunity to buy their fabulous designer knock-offs for £20.
It's an important development for the world of high street fashion, as the law has changed recently to make "copying" of this kind much harder for labels to get away with. In the past, Jimmy Choo would have had to prove that the New Look shoes were pretty much identical before the law would take any action. Thanks to a new European law, though, they can now simply point to a buckle or some other small part of the item in question, which copies their design.
I wonder what's going to happen with the copies high street copies we're so used to, then, in everything from shoes to clothing and bags?

I'm all for copyright laws, but I like my 'designer inspired' items. On my current budget (which is VERY limited), there's no way I could shell out for a pair of real Jimmy Choos, unless they popped up on eBay for under £20. And really - the people who are buying the New Look 'copies' aren't exactly the girls who WOULD consider a real Choo for the most part, surely?
