How To Wear: Sweater Dresses Pt1

Reading the comments on the all-new Shiny Fashion Forums its obvious that you want to wear sweater dresses but don't fancy looking like fools in the process, so I've compiled a short guide to looking good in a sweater dress for you all.

Its fair enough to say that wearing a stretchy unsupportive sack can be unflattering at the best of times. First of all, you need good underwear. This doesn't mean excruciating corsets or 'magic' pants but something comfortable, seamless, supportive and flesh-coloured should do the trick. As someone who's seen many a cheek of quivering flesh under velour tracksuit; g-strings are not a good idea for knit fabrics. Figleaves have a 'no VPL' section where you might find what you're looking for, or try Primark for bargain microfibre briefs at £4 for two pairs.

If you're apple-shaped like me (waist..what waist?!) show off your legs and hide your stomach/love handles with a short voluminous dress; empire-line dresses are a good look. If you're more curvy the choose a dress that has a defined waist to show off your hips and ensure you don't look like a sheep; ribbed sections, smocking or a well-positioned belt are all good ways of defining waists.

If you are short or curvier a low-cut neckline will elongate and flatter, go as low as you can, adding a light vest top for modesty if the dress needs it (this will also support large boobs). Fabric is very important, something thick or ribbed will smooth lumps but can add bulk so choose carefully.  Another very important point is an all-wool dress can be very warm, so make sure you are picking the right fabric weight and composition for you. Lambswool is very warm, cotton will be cooler and a bit of Lycra will ensure the dress springs back into shape. Remember if you are buying pure wool you will have to handwash your item...Forever!
