Swimwear of the day - Retro Swimsuits
As we all know, I love a bit of retro, so I couldn't let a swimwear special go by without a nod to some 50s style finds. This playsuit-esque look is not for everyone, but sometimes covering up can be just as sexy as showing off flesh. There are fewer 50s style finds on the high street than I imagined this year (though Kelly Brook's range for New Look is a good starting point) so these ones are designer. I think with this look this it does pay to spend a little bit more, or you'll end up looking like you've squeezed into a child's cossie.
On the left is Juicy Couture's shirred and frilled one-piece for $150. Their beach range contains a lot of frilled numbers this year, and Lost's Evangeline Lilly has been spotted in one of the bikinis. It's a bit of a gamble on a muscular body like hers, but if you have curves these retro suits will give you a real Marilyn Monroe / Jayne Mansfield figure. It does take a certain amount of confidence to pull off the frill, but add big shades and big hair and you're halfway there!
Over in the UK, the brand to look out for is the fabulous Pistol Panties, something of a Holy Grail of swimwear as far as I'm concerned. Their swimsuits and bikinis all have a retro feel, though not all of them are as out there as this shoe print bustier and frilled bottoms. This is definitely more for poolside posing than swimming in the sea, but it's retro chic at its best. Looking like a Hollywood starlet circa 1955 does come at a cost though; the top is £109 and the bottoms £28.
