Australian fashion: Alice McCall and Stephanie Conley
Ubiquitous though they may be (still!), Ugg boots aren’t the only Australian fashion export. Our summer is a perfect time to investigate Aussie designs as they are often geared towards the warmer weather. Alice McCall is one of Australia’s premier designers and has even had a lengthily stint on our own fair isles. Her designs have a touch of the Stella McCartney about them, in that they are - like McCartney’s - ultra feminine, soft, and highly wearable. Her 2006/2007 spring summer collection hit the runway last month in Aus (they are in the throes of winter right now I believe) but for this summer, her current collection throws up some gems. Her highly covetable blue apron creation (left) has sold out world wide, but you can still bag one on ebay if you have the money. I’m also loving her empire line sheer white dress, perfect for summer, it’s fantastically boob enhancing, yet skims over the potential trouble areas of tummy, arms and upper thighs. It would look great with a halterneck bikini underneath to protect your modesty!
To get your hands on Aussie designs in Blighty, check out London Boutique Antipodium, who stock Alice McCall as well as several other prolific Australian designers. In the US head for Barneys who also stock Alice McCall.
Whether from her joint label (Conley + Cranford) or her own labels, Stephanie Conley’s designs are simple with a laid back elegance. The fact that her designs hang the wardrobes of stars as diverse as Naomi Watts and Kim Cattrall is testament to her classic yet easy to wear styles. Shown are two dresses from her current collection, and a Conley + Cranford dress (right).
Stephanie Conley is available from Kitson.
