The email requests for prom and formal dresses are trickling in as we come towards the lasts term of school and university. I remember the trouble I had trying to find the perfect dress for my leaver's do - I ended up making my own! So to help you poor formal shoppers out there, over the next few weeks we'll be bringing your our favourites from across the web and the high street. We'll start with some quirky takes on classic styles from those of you who want to move away from the norm.
Debut's £80 black checked prom dress mixes a classic style with an unexpected fabric. To avoid this looking too twee, I'd top it off with some punky accessories. Perhaps 80s style stiletto shoes and chunky beads...in red of course! Meanwhile, Oasis are also using check in an even more directional style with their tulip skirted dress. This one needs serious guts to pull it off. Keep accessories to a minimum. All you really need are heels and an unfussy hairstyle.
Nudes are a difficult colour to wear but, as we've proved before, it can be done. Avoid the temptation to go full-on Christina Aguilera with your fake tan, but with a golden glow, a toned body and lots of confidence, the draped grecian cocktail dress from Miss Selfridge (£38) or Warehouse's fairy-esque nude gathered dress (£75) will definitely turn heads.
