Beauty Box #2: Fake Tans

Beauty Box number two is here, where we pick our top tried-and-tested products in a specific category. This week we're sharing our fake tanning secrets (even if I did have to wipe snow from my car yesterday). If there's a specific type of beauty product you'd like to see us share our secrets about in the beauty box, drop us a line.

Charlotte's Pick: Fake Tan Season hasn’t really gotten in to full swing just yet, as there’s not much need for a golden glow when it’s too cold to go outside in anything that reveals any flesh. Despite this, having been ‘blessed’ with milky white skin, I’m already thinking about reaching for the bottle. My favourite tan this year is Eco Tan (£12 from QVC).

Tan1
The spray on only application technique means your palms aren’t tangoed, and it’s super easy to put on – you can even do your back yourself. It produces the least streaky and most natural result out of all the tans I’ve tried (a lot, I really don’t change colour at all in the sun) and it’s not too pricey. Perfect for getting a head start on summer.

Gemma's Pick: I too was born pasty-pale and only have to look at the sun to burn. The only tan I'm ever going to get is fake, and even then I have to be super-careful I don't look dirty or orange. Of late, I've been using the moisturising lotions laced with self-tan (Johnson's holiday skin at the mo, though I'm about to try Dove so I'll let you know how that goes). They're great, so long as you apply them evenly like a fake tan and don't slap them on like body lotion (streaks ahoy! I learned the hard way). Top of my tans though, is actually a Boots bargain...

Tan2
Soltan's no-streaks mousse (currently reduced to £3.50!) provides really great results for a great price. I can through a can very quickly (lots of flesh to cover) but it goes on easily, lasts a relatively long time and has never streaked noticeably unlike some more expensive alternatives. The colour is light and natural, but definitely noticeable. You do get the usual fake tan smell as it's developing, but put it half an hour before bed and you don't notice (and it's never stained my sheets).

I have used loads of different kinds of fake tans and last year I started using the new moisturisers, e.g. Johnsons holiday skin, which I love and also Clarins have an aftersun with a bit of fake tan in which is great! After having used so many different products for so long I've mastered how to apply them evenly but I am yet to find something that fades well. Now I only use the afore mentioned Clarins and Johnson's but I find they always end up fading badly and when the time comes to reapply after a few days, I have to scrub and scrub myself raw to get rid of any remnants in order to be able to apply more. The more I've applied before, e.g. if I apply it for 3 days running rather than just one day the worse it fades, what should I do?

Hi there, I just wanted to say what a fabulous job you're doing Gemma and Charlotte. I also wanted to say that in case you haven't tried it, Origins' Let It Show is also a really good moisturising fake tanner which smells quite yummy. Keep up the fabulous posts!
