Every magazine I read lately seems to be pushing ‘Geisha Style’. Apparently we should all don white faces and jet black hair just because the movie ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ is currently being promoted like no ones business. This seems to be a trend set to continue, as the Telegraph recently ran a piece on ‘western chic’, based on the movie Brokeback Mountain. This particular article is about men, but when I checked, there does seem to be a whole lot of checked shirts for sale for us girls. Of course, thanks to a certain Ms Simpson and her Daisy Dukes, cowgirl chic has been around for a while, but this season it seems to be moving more towards more mature madras checks, rather than cutoff shorts, cowboy boots and huge belt buckles. Thanks heavens for small mercies.

Check out Next for their green check blouse (£19.99) or Miss Selfridge for a multi check long sleeved shirt (£25). Team with bootcut jeans for your ultimate western fantasy. Yee-haa. (Sorry, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger not included).

When the weather eventually warms up, checked dresses can provide a summery take on the Western theme. New Look (£20, not available online) and Antoni and Alison at Debanhams (£30) have combined checks with the trend for shirt dresses. Wear the second one over jeans unless you like to take style tips from Jodie Marsh.

Finally, ff you want to be a cowgirl on the beach, then kit yourself out with Additions £17 checked bustier, and FCUK’s cowboy hat (£20). [Charlotte Howells]
