The Shirtwaister Dress

I love the shirt dress. It's versatile, flattering, and you can dress it up or down. It's smart enough for work but casual enough for a day of shopping. I can't pick between plain and patterned, so I've found some bargain versions of both for you to feast your eyes on!

Stella McCartney has always been a fan of oversized shirts and her Spring/Summer show was no exception. Copy the catwalk with this Oasis version, available online for £40 at Additions. Buy it now and team with thick tights or jeans, then come summer wear on its own with sandals.

Can't afford Michael Kors' £580 patterned shirt dress? Then make your way to Miss Selfridge for an affordable alternatives for just £38.

Unless you want to look like your wearing your boyfriends too-big-for-you shirt, it's always best to go for a dress that's fitted. Then you can belt it in at the waist to give you that desired cinched in look. River Islands Kenya Print shirt dress (£19.99) will do the trick, and the dark colour will slim you down too. If you're wanting to hide lumps and bumps, choose a thicker, and therefore more forgiving fabric. Try Topshop's Corduroy Version (£30), available in blue and grey. [Charlotte Howells]
