Absolutely Legless
Forgive me if I’m wrong but I really thought leggings died a well-deserved death along with Jane Fonda workouts and leg-warmers way back in the 80’s. Happily for Lycra - who are responsible for preventing that awful ‘baggy knees’ syndrome so commonly experienced with the 80’s version - leggings are back in vogue. No, they really are in Vogue. As if we didn’t have enough of them the first time round, now they are being hailed as part of a ‘dancewear’ trend, along with leotards (I’m not even going to go there) and dance inspired layers. Madonna, we blame you!
Sure enough, leggings are being flogged at Topshop for £15, along with a dance inspired deconstructed top. And just to make things even worse, they're available in a nice horizontal stripe! Please don’t attempt this look unless you are tall (calf-length leggings cut your legs in half), no larger than a size 10 (they are not exactly flattering), and don’t have an inch of cellulite (yes, you really can see it all).
For a slightly more wearable look think Keira Knightley, and use your leggings as an alternative to tights or skinny jeans. Wear opaque ones (like Abercrombie & Fitch's $24.50 style) tucked into your boots (£100 at Faith) with a long-line top, sweater dress or mini (ruched polo neck dress £28 at ASOS). The trick is to cover your hips and avoid showing off an attractive camel-hoof crotch. Mmm, sexy! [Charlotte Howells (& Gemma)]

This trend is just wrong on so many different levels. I'm discouraging it in anyone who asks my opinion. Even the "leggings under skirts" thing is touch-and-go, because it chops legs in half, so you have to be supermodel tall to wear it. *sigh*
Stateside, Express is displaying "the sexy new knit pant" in their windows. And you know what? The mannequins have cameltoe. I don't want to think about what will happen on actual people.
